MEET ME, THE CHEF

CHEF KENT VAN DYK

My name is Kent Van Dyk.

One of the best things about food is being able to share it with people...your friends, your family and even strangers.  The only thing better is teaching people about food, where it comes from and how to cook it.  I've spent more than half my life in the restaurant business (and I'm old) as a busboy, waiter, restaurant owner and chef.  I've been lucky enough to travel the world and work with some of the best chefs in some of the greatest restaurants.  The one thing that I always take away from these experiences is how much cooks like to share their knowledge, techniques and "tricks of the trade" with people who are eager to learn and passionate.  In 2009 I decided to go back to Teacher's College so that I could share all the things I've learned in the kitchen with young people.  Learning to cook for yourself and the people around you is one of the greatest life skills there is.  You will always need to eat, people will always want to eat out and people who know how to cook food will never be out of a job!

I'm lucky that I was given this great opportunity to teach Culinary Arts at Longfields.  But I still continue to travel, eat, cook and learn about food because there is so much out there to learn.

"...those who dares to teach should never cease to learn!"
